Nice machine, but is the mechanical design strong enough to process metal like aluminium.
I mean really milling not engraving.

When i want to build this, i prefer to weld it with MIG, its more stable and easier to build it.

Me: Whether a CNC can process aluminum or not depends on the quality of your build as well as the router motor and your milling tool. I did some experiments milling aluminum in the video about the coolant install. A high resolution foto showing aluminum is figure 7 on this page. I tried iron as well, but wouldn't call this success (yet).
Would be interested to see you welded frame. Welding might be easier if you are a skilled welder or else you will ruin your frame ;-)

Me: Currently a openSCAD drawing is part of the download package, showing the dimensions. A second file lists the length of the square tubes and positions of drill holes.

Und alle anderen Maschinen funktionieren auch mit Raspberry Pi? Finde dein Support jedenfalls klasse und bin gespannt deine Maschinen mal nach zu bauen. Mir haben es auf jeden Fall die CNC und Plotter angetan und finde es faszinierend.

Me: Das steht in den Beschreibungen zu den jeweiligen Maschinen, ob da ein Arduino oder ein Raspberry Pi verwendet wird. Meine Maschinen mit Sensor-Rückkopplung (Lichtschranken) verwenden einen Arduino.
Ich hoffe, mal eine deiner Maschinen zu sehen.

Aso ok dachte das wäre schon fertig. Kann man die Quellcods auch auf einem Raspberry Pi nutzen oder ist man da an einen Adruino gebunden?

Me: Version 3.2.1 benötigt einen Arduino für die Feedback-Schleife der Lichtschranken. Die Software für Version 3.2.2 mit bipolaren Schrittmotoren wird direkt auf dem Raspberry Pi laufen.

Ich wollte fragen ob es irgendwo ne Anleitung zu deinen Projekten gibt zum runterladen. Es würde mich sehr interessieren alles einmal selber zu bauen

Me: Auf jeder Seite mit einem Projekt gibt's auch die Anleitung oder suchst du etwas spezielles (dann soltest du spezieller nachfragen damit ich weiterhelfen kann)? Quellcodes der verwendeten Software gibt's in der Rubrik Download.
CNC v3.2 befindet sich noch in der Entwicklungsphase, daher ist die Dokumentation zu dieser Maschine noch unvollständig - hab' Geduld.

Me: You can't use relays - they are too slow. I am using BTS7960 H bridges that are good for up to 42A at 40V in a new version of this machine.

Me: Sorry, but I don't support closed source windows spyware. You can get and install Linux for free, either replacing windows or setup a dual boot (don't foget to make a backup of your data before installing) and that's the better choice for you. Linux rules robotics, Internet and IoT. If you'd like to become an expert, forget about windows.

You have right, the compilation doesn t have error, but when i try tu run the compilation it s give the message init_serialport....

Whit the arduino ide all it s run good, the compilation and upload it s working.

Me: Have a look at the FAQ section of CNC v2.0 because the software is identical. It's questions number 8 + 9 that treat your problem.

Me: stepTime is the minimum time (in microseconds) the microcontroller waits before the next step is commanded. The higher that value, the slower your motor.

What you have done is amazing, but what keep me in the dark is the CODE, can you please explain how the code works? How interact the signal from the fototransistor to move the dc motors and then how the code in the arduino interact with commands-CNC.c ? also, can Universal Gcode Sender be used instead ?
I have disassembled 3 printers to get the parts, build the fisica thing is not that hard well it is but the code is black magic for me.

Me: I can't explain how to do coding in a comment. I will start a series about "Physical computing" in the not so far future, explaining how to swith motors, read sensors and so how the CNC software works. It will take at least a year to create all those lessons and you won't be able to learn it all on an afternoon.
G-code support will be implemented in my CNC software. Currently it only can process Scalable Vector Graphics (*.svg). Be patient.

On the water oil suspension or emulsion as coolant:
I am not an expert. On my last working attempt I used 230 g Water,  16 g nativ sunflower oil,  1/2 TS lecithin
This was a stable milk with 6.5% Oil. I used it for drilling, tapping, and sawing. Probably the nativ oil will get faster rancid, than more refined oils, like generic cooking oil ("Bratöl").
But as I remeber most mill bits require an emulsion with at least 4% oil, so this should be fine.

One suggestion for the coolant: mix water, oil and little lecithin.
This may requiers a mixer.
Don't take to much oil. My last attempt has 30% oil and a bit to much lecithin, result was a texture like mayonnaise :-)

Me: Cream is nothing but a water oil suspension with an emulgator ;-)
If 30% was a failure, what kind of oil do you use and what's you personal best formula?

I like your approach for a DIY CNC router machine. I can imagine you will make a complete set of tools for a low budget workshop by the end of this decade. Hope you get into designing a DIY plasma or torch sheet metal cutting CNC machine one day :D Looking for what you will make.

Hallo Norbert, nachdem ich ganz erstaunt auf die Hompage gestoßen bin über youtube und nach etwas studieren, ist die Frage aufgetaucht - würde sich die CNC-Fräsen nicht genauso zu einem 3D-Dricker umbauen lassen oder?

Me: Eine CNC Fräse sollte möglichst massiv gebaut sein, um Schwingungen beim Fräsen zu unterbinden. 3D-Drucker hingegen sollten - zumindest was die Achsen betrifft - eher leichtgewichtig gebaut sein, damit diese sehr schnell drucken können. Diese Anforderungen wiedersprechen sich. Eine gute CNC Fräse ist immer ein schlechter, weil grottnlangsamer 3D-Drucker, ein guter 3D-Drucker eine schlechte, weil sich verwindende CNC Fräse.

Me: The vinyl cutters are often made in such a way that they turn passively. The drawback is, that this causes a tiny offset, but creating a cutter head that turns the blade actively is more difficult to implement. You have to change the mechanics, the electronics and of course the software to make this work actively and there is more than a comment needed to explain. I keep your suggest in mind and might implement something like that some later. Currently I have to make CNC v3.2 run.

I haven't done that with a bipolar stepper motor yet, but it's not too different. One step of the stepper motor must trigger a change in the encoder disc. For a 100 steps per revolution stepper motor you need a sensor disc having 25 teeth.

hello, I want to tell you that this engineering is outstanding, i can easily understand your desire to make this without special  tools or special processing but not penalizing the precision I would like to make an equal but a little big 50x60, Trapezoidal Spindles and goods motors:  can it cut 15mm aluminum?

Me: Thanks! Of course can this machine cut 15mm aluminum, same as all CNC routers can. The question to be answered is: How precisely can it cut that material!
I will try to find an answer to that question in comming videos. With the current (cheapest) configuration, the router motor bends, resulting in visible errors when cutting aluminum. Another issue is the low machine speed. I am currently making a video about the electronics and I am doing optimiations to speed it up. Be patient, follow the build process and see what this machine will be good for.

I admire your work, simply and efective methods.
I using freecad for draw 3D thechnical things, and y can'd open your 3d filen in freecad, can you export in one of these suported formats.
Standard formats such as STEP, IGES, OBJ, STL, DXF, SVG, STL, DAE, IFC or OFF, NASTRAN, VRML in addition to FreeCAD's native Fcstd file format.

Me: Sorry, but I can't. OpenScad is currently the only 3D design software I am working with. The documentation about this CNC is currently in a very early state (same as the machine). I will provide a better documentation and CAD data in other file formats as soon as the machine runs fine and I am starting to create the final documentation. Be patient or install OpenSCAD on your machine (and Linux as your OS).

Adding small brushes on the x and y axis would clean the rail preventing metal chips from being trapped under the ball bearings as the carrier moves horzontally, improving accuracy on larger jobs.

Hab nur ganz zart gedrückt. Eher wie ein Kalb... Im Ernst, ich habe etwas viel kleineres, mit einer Schlichtfeile mit feinem Hieb bearbeitet. Kommt Wahrscheinlich wirklich auf die Maschine an. Bei den eher günstigen um etwa 250-400 Euro scheint es oft so gelöst zu sein... Wahrscheinlich brauchen sie ein Verkaufsargument für die Fräsmaschinen, sonst könnte sich ja jeder einen X-Y-Tisch bauen :-)

Me: Meine Maschine (Made in good old Germany) hat vor etlichen Jahren auch nur 175,- D-Mark gekostet (zu Zeiten, als die in Yuan zu zahlenden Produkte Europa noch nicht in Massen erreicht hatten) und die zumindest steckt das alles locker weg ;-)

Tolles Projekt, danke für die, wie immer, ausführliche Dokumentation. Die Ständerbohrmaschine als Drehbank zu benutzen kann gefährlich sein. Bei vielen Modellen endet die Spindel in einem Konus, das Bohrfutter ist nur "aufgesteckt" und mit 2-3 Hammerschlägen fixiert. Das Bohrfutter kann abfallen bei seitlicher Belastung. Ich wusste das, habs trotzdem gemacht und promt... Mit Glück fällts gerade nach unten, wenn es verklemmt will ich nicht daneben stehen... Beste Grüsse, Timo

Me: Danke für die Warnung. Mir ist das bei meiner Maschine noch nie passiert und wie an den "Kampfspuren" unschwer zu sehen, ist das Ding im Laufe der Jahrzehnte wirklich hart herangenommen worden. Ich werde in der Bauanleitung einen entsprechenden Warnhinweis platzieren. Wie bei allem ist gefühlvolles herangehen angesagt und nicht "Drücken wie ein Ochs'".
